Yacht Management Services

Douglas E. Hoogs
Yacht Manager/ Builder/ Marketing/ Sales RESUME 1967 Licensed captain to present- Motor and Sail to 1,600 tons- with over 200,000 miles During my early years I already knew that I wished to spend my time devoted to the yachting life and the sea. To this end, I studied the art of sailing and seamanship while making my own living at 15 years of age as the operator of a launch tender service in Oyster Bay, 1973 Graduated My years at the Merchant Marine Academy helped me define the area of professional pursuit that would set my path toward the present. My role with the waterfront activities became my passion after classes. I eventually became the Vice Commodore of the rather large sailing team at the school. We managed a fleet of over 100 vessels for the purpose of training and racing. While not a brilliant student, I excelled in all forms of discipline regarding the art and management of operating, maintaining, repairing and building ships. It always amazes me how those years of study have given me to confidence and ability to take on rather complex and difficult assignments with a clear vision of how to turn them into successful missions. 1973- present Captain of motor and sail vessels to 285 feet in length world wide. I look back on my career at sea with plenty of nostalgia and few regrets. During my professional life I have had the good fortune of being in command of some very special sailing and motoryachts. I accrued over 200,000 miles on open oceans and seas around the world. Operating Tall Ships were every bit the adventure we expected them to be with danger and excitement. Magnificent motoryachts that were as high performance as their hype were always a test to the nerves in restricted waters. Always it has been said that the handling of crew is the greatest challenge of all for any captain or owner but on this point I must disagree. I am sure that I would have achieved much less in my career without the help of my yachting teams both afloat and ashore. Hiring with care and managing with leadership certainly can make all the difference between success and failure in any of life’s pursuits. By the time that I managed the build of this high performance motoryacht for the owner, I was ready to try another direction in my yachting adventures. While operating this exciting and innovative yacht was always full of surprises, I had already received the bug to become more involved in yacht construction. Since I was educated in ship construction and naval architecture through my studies at Kings Point and I had half a lifetime operating these vessels, I felt uniquely qualified to take this new direction in my career. This was the first and no where near my last experience with Italian Yacht Construction and Italian cultural exchange. Having oeverseen the construction of and the operation of the Tecnomarine yacht “Longitude Zero,” it was considered by the shipyard’s management that I could be affected as their US Marketing and Sales Manager. For a little over two years I filled this role for them in 1991-1992 Project build manager/Captain "Windship 105" 1990 at Windship, When I discovered that Windship was building some of the most beautiful and innovative sailing yachts near my home in It is often said that “timing is everything.” The buyer of the Windship 105 took delivery at the same time the “Teel” project needed extract project management assistance. We had 80 people working long hours to complete this “state of the art” automated Hood Design. This custom designed sailing vessel remained in the same family for over 14 years. The length of time of ownership speaks well toward a successful conclusion to any serious yacht build. The owner of this yacht hired me to be his agent during this build. We worked closely with the shipyard and developed an expedition yacht that is still owned today by the same family over a decade later. This was a very busy period for me. I had several yachts to oversee as the owner’s agent in one shipyard. Each day my time was spent going over construction details and diplomatically working with the shipyard’s staff to a successful conclusion. Again…a busy time for me. On several occasions, I would travel to other new construction shipyards to evaluate and survey yachts being built with the leveraged funding from Debis. It was useful to also learn how other shipyards work through very complicated construction details. This book helped me define my own thinking about the yachting industry and the many turns one can make on a path to pleasurable construction and sea going experiences. The objective of writing the book was to explore some of the flaws found in the relationships between trusting new yacht owners and businesses who are more interested in their money than their own integrity. 1998 - 2004 Director of North American Yachts and builder of "Genesis 153", in 2001 Co-Author of "Megayacht True Tales" hard cover still in stores, also in audio This book includes ten very interesting tales of true adventures in the modern yachting world. We can also always learn from other people’s experiences. 2004 Co-Author of “Megayacht Wisdom II” hard cover still in stores This remake of the original book adds 18 specialized chapters written by some of our team members and associates. This book is up to date on modern yachting codes and practices. 2004-2008 Sales and Marketing manager, purchasing agent, systems design for Kingship My first experience in 2008 to present Managing refit work, marketing for a new yacht builder in These ongoing enterprises are a continuing advancement in my professional experiences and allow me to offer even more value to my customers. The emerging construction markets are gaining a life of their own in recent months with the altering economic structure of world businesses.

Over the past 15 years, I managed 3 projects at Lazzara as an agent for owners. This first rate yard has been able to find the holy grail trilogy of achievement. They honor their price commitments, they deliver on time, and they offer unsurpassed customer service. All three projects ended in success and happy ownership experiences. Needless to say, I was happy to be part of the team!
